ATP Tours
The top-tier tour of men’s tennis is the ATP World Tour. The ATP Challenger Tour event is the second highest level of competition and is administered by the ATP. The Futures Tournaments on the International Tennis Federation (ITF) circuit are the third and final tier of international professional competition. The “ATP Champions Tour” is a men’s tennis organization intended for former tennis professionals, who have since retired from mainstream professional tennis touring. Eligible players must be over 30 years old, have been either a world #1, a Grand Slam finalist, or participated in winning the Davis Cup. The Champions Tour usually consists of 10 events around the world, with a final “Masters” event.
ATP Grand Slam Events
The four Grand Slam Tournaments, also called The Majors (marked with an *), are the most important tennis events of the year in terms of world ranking points, tradition, prize-money awarded, and public attention. They are the Australian Open, the French Open, Wimbledon, and the U.S. Open. A singles player or doubles team that wins all four Grand Slam tournaments in the same year is said to have achieved the “Grand Slam.”
ATP Davis Cup
The Davis Cup is the premier international team event in men’s tennis. It is run by the ITF and is contested between teams of players from competing countries in an elimination format. The competition began in 1900 as a challenge between Great Britain and the United States. In 2005, 134 nations entered teams into the competition. The most successful countries over the history of the tournament are the United States (winning 32 tournaments and finishing as runners-up 29 times) and Australia (winning 28 times, including four occasions with New Zealand under the name ‘Australasia’, and finishing as runners-up 19 times). The present champion is Spain.
ATP Championship
The ATP champion player is determined each year by the total number of points accumulated over the course of the year from tournament play. Each tournament awards points based on how a player finishes in the event. The point totals vary depending on the level and importance of the tournament.
