The Majors
The Men’s Major Golf Championships, often referred to simply as The Majors (marked with an * above), are the four most prestigious annual tournaments in professional men’s golf. Alongside the biennial Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup team competitions, the Majors are golf’s marquee events. Elite players from all over the world participate in these tournaments, and the reputations of the greatest players in golf history are largely based on the number of Major Championship victories they accumulate. The Masters Tournament is played each year in the same location. The U. S. Open Championship and the PGA Championship are played at a different location in the United States each year, and the British Open Championship is played at a different location in the United Kingdom each year.
The PGA Playoffs and FedEx Cup
The FedEx Cup is a championship trophy for the PGA Tour. Its introduction in 2007 marked the first time that men’s professional golf sanctioned a playoff system. Regular Season events are worth 500 points to the winner. Playoff events are worth 2,500 points to the winner — quintuple Regular Season points. All points carry through until THE TOUR Championship, where points are reset to ensure that the top 30 PGA players have a chance to win the FedExCup. The Playoffs are important because points are quintupled in Playoff tournaments, making possible big moves to the top of the standings. No single victory, even at THE TOUR Championship, ensures that a player will win the FedEx Cup. The Playoff tournaments are:
- The Barclays-Ridgewood Country Club, Paramus, NJ
- Deutsche Bank Championship-TPC Boston, Norton, MA
- BMW Championship-Cog Hill Golf and Country Club, Lemont, IL
- THE TOUR Championship-East Lake Golf Club, Atlanta, GA

The Senior PGA Championship
The Senior PGA Championship is a sponsored tour for golfers over 50, and approximately 25 tournaments are played during the course of the season. Most of the tournaments are played over three rounds (54 holes), which is one round less than regular tournaments on the PGA Tour. Because of this and having a smaller number of players, there are generally no “cuts” between any of the rounds. However, in the five senior Majors, golfers play a full 72 holes (four rounds). In 2006, the PGA Tour organization voted to allow players the option to use golf carts during most events on the tour. The five Major championships and certain other events are excluded from the option to use a golf cart.

There is no formalized PGA players bargaining association or union.
