Pre-Season (“Spring Training”) generally begins in mid-February for most of the players (pitchers routinely report earlier than their teammates). Spring training is a series of practices and scheduled exhibition games preceding the start of the regular season in the first week of April. Spring training allows new players to audition for roster and position spots, and gives existing team players practice time prior to start of the regular season. MLB teams conduct spring training as part of the “Cactus League” in Arizona or the “Grapefruit League” in Florida.
Spring training is widely popular among baseball fans of all ages. Many fans plan spring vacations around spring training with travel to Cactus League and/or Grapefruit League ballparks to watch favorite teams and young players in a smaller, more relaxed setting at generally lower ticket prices. Stadium size ranges from 5,000 to 13,000-seat capacity.
