WTA Tours
The WTA sponsors two tournament series, in addition to the Grand Slam events. Premier Tournaments: Premier Mandatory comprised of four combined tournaments with male professional players and equal prize money for men and women; Premier Five comprised of five events; and Premier comprised of ten events. International Tournaments: Comprised of 31 tournaments. The tournaments in all three series take place in locations around the world.
WTA Grand Slam Events
The four Grand Slam Tournaments, also called The Majors (marked with an * above), are the most important tennis events of the year in terms of world ranking points, tradition, prize-money awarded, and public attention. They are the Australian Open, the French Open, Wimbledon, and the U.S. Open. A singles player or doubles team that wins all four Grand Slam tournaments in the same year is said to have achieved the “Grand Slam.”
WTA Fed Cup
The WTA Fed Cup is the premier team competition in women’s tennis, launched in 1963 to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the International Tennis Federation (ITF). The Fed Cup is the equivalent of the men’s Davis Cup. The Fed Cup events take place in February, April, and November in selected cities around the world.
WTA Championship
The WTA Tour Championships is a tennis tournament played annually at the end of the season for the top-ranked players on the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) tour. The WTA Tour Championships are generally considered to be the fifth most prestigious event on the women’s tour after the four Grand Slam tournaments. The most recent championships took place in Doha, Qatar and Bali, Indonesia.
